At the hospital they jogged toward the ER. As they went through the double doors, Joe shivered. Milo looked at him. “Are you okay?”

“Spend too much time here,” Joe muttered.

Milo squeezed his shoulder. “I’m sorry.”

Joe gave him a strained smile. “Me too. We need to find Cal and Ross.”

“We’ll ask at information.”

Milo’s uniform opened doors for them, and within a few minutes, Joe sat on the bed, clutching his young lover to him. Milo stood by the door, giving the couple a moment together. He needed to find Ross, but he wanted to check on Cal first. The shifter was dressed in a flimsy hospital gown, and from what Milo could see, he was already mostly healed, the cuts and bruises almost faded.

Joe clutched Cal like he was never going to let him go. “God, Cal, I thought you were dead.”

“I thought I was dead.” Cal flinched and Joe let him go a fraction.

“Did I hurt you? Where does it hurt?”

Cal snorted a laugh. “Still tender in a few places, but I don’t care. Don’t let go of me.” He gripped Joe as tightly as Joe was holding him.

Joe lay back against the pillow and settled Cal against him. “You’re not going anywhere without me again.”

For once Cal didn’t make a protest. Instead he curled against Joe and closed his eyes.

Milo wanted to question Cal, but the scowl on Joe’s face told him he wasn’t going to get anywhere right now. He left them alone to go find Ross. The security man was two doors down from Cal and fretting.

“I should be in there with him,” Ross said as soon as Milo opened the door. “He’s unprotected.”

“Hello to you too,” Milo said as he sat down. “Joe’s in there and nothing’s gonna get between him and his boy. Anyway, Cal’s already healed, unlike you.”

“I’m okay. I need to be out of here and doing my fucking job.”

Milo held back a smirk. “You must be driving the staff nuts.”

Ross shrugged, then winced. “Shit, I’ve got to stop doing that.”

“How are you?” Milo studied Ross closely, noting the bruising around his eyes and the pinched lines around his mouth. He flinched every time he moved. The handsome security man wasn’t looking so pretty now. “You’ve taken a beating. How’s your arm?” he asked, indicating Ross’s right arm in its temporary cast.

“Stings a bit,” Ross said flatly. “They’re going to put it in a real cast soon.”

“You refused the pain medication, didn’t you?”

“Yeah. Needed to keep my wits about me until the Cavalry arrived.”

“When Eli gets here, you’re taking it.”

Ross flapped his uninjured hand around. “I’m fine. What time is it? Eli said he’d be here about three.”

Milo checked his watch. “Another hour.” His wolf stirred restlessly at the mention of Eli’s name. “So what happened?”

“We were rammed from the driver’s side by a large SUV. I saw it tailing us and called in the license plate to Eli.”

“You should have called me,” Milo snapped. He was going to kill Eli for not giving him all the details.
